Miguel’s path to competitive integrated employment began the day he graduated high school in May of 2023, and is a shining example of how determination, perseverance and the right supports can open doors to new opportunities and achieve goals we set for ourselves.

Miguel has always aspired to find a job where he could contribute his talents and become a valued member of a team. Like many job seekers with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) however, he has faced several obstacles in his journey to employment. Miguel learned quickly after high school that the job market can be a tough place; he experienced companies that weren’t hiring, losing positions to other job candidates, nervousness in interviewing, and other challenges. Once Miguel connected with The Opportunity Tree’s SEEDS Employment Services however, things began to change.
Our Employment Support Specialists have worked with Miguel to identify his strengths and employable skills including his outgoing personality, his love for helping others, and his strong work ethic. We’ve also helped Miguel to identify and set clear employment goals for himself, including finding a role where Miguel could thrive and feel valued. With this support in place through each step of the job seeking process, Miguel has worked on refining his resume, practicing interview skills, building his confidence, and learning how to best showcase his abilities and talents to employers.
Next step was to re-enter the job market and apply for available positions, all while working with local businesses to advocate for Miguel and highlight the benefits of inclusive hiring practices.
Recently, Jewel’s Bakery & Café, a charming and bustling local restaurant known for its welcoming environment and delicious gluten free menu, posted a job opening for a customer service position. Recognizing it as a perfect match for Miguel’s skills and personality, SEEDS staff helped him submit an application and prepare for the interview. Miguel’s enthusiasm and genuine desire to make a difference left a lasting impression on the hiring team and as of November 2024, Miguel started his new job at Jewel’s Bakery & Café! As part of the team, Miguel greets customers with a warm smile, assists with food and drink orders, and helps maintain the inviting atmosphere of the café.
Next up, Miguel will begin learning about “back of the house” duties including food prep and supply ordering. Now that Miguel has secured his position, SEEDS staff will continue to check in with Miguel on-the-job, ensuring he has the tools and resources he needs to continuously succeed. Miguel is already thriving in his role, building meaningful connections with coworkers and customers alike. His future is in his hands and his journey is a testament to the power of collaboration and the impact of inclusive employment practices.
